Nobel Prize Week
Nobel Prize Week (Also see Bryans entry) The first full week of October is always an exciting time to be around MIT, because it is Nobel Prize week. For me, this week is routinely characterized by setting my alarm to wake up super early to check the website and see if any MIT folks won. I have to be honest: I was bummed yesterday when Prof. Alan Guth 68 was again shut out for the Nobel in Physics; his work on the inflationary universe is widely seen as Nobel-caliber. So, coming off of that disappointment, I decided today to sleep in and not check on the Chemistry prize. Big mistake. Today, Prof. Richard Schrock, along with researchers in France and at Caltech, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the inorganic chemistry principle of metathesis. What is that? Organic substances contain the element carbon. Carbon atoms can form long chains and rings, bind other elements such as hydrogen and oxygen, form double bonds, etc. All life on Earth is based on these carbon compounds, but they can also be produced artificially through organic synthesis. The word metathesis means change-places. In metathesis reactions, double bonds are broken and made between carbon atoms in ways that cause atom groups to change places. This happens with the assistance of special catalyst molecules. Metathesis can be compared to a dance in which the couples change partners. Metathesis is used daily in the chemical industry, mainly in the development of pharmaceuticals and of advanced plastic materials. Thanks to the Laureates contributions, synthesis methods have been developed that are more efficient (fewer reaction steps, fewer resources required, less wastage), simpler to use (stable in air, at normal temperatures and pressures) and environmentally friendlier (non-injurious solvents, less hazardous waste products). This represents a great step forward for green chemistry, reducing potentially hazardous waste through smarter production. Metathesis is an example of how important basic science has been applied for the benefit of man, society and the environment. Thanks to the Nobel website for the description; also check out the really cool Flash animation that helps to explain further. You should also know, though, that Schrock isnt some inaccessible professor. In fact, he usually teaches 5.03: Principles of Inorganic Chemistry, a typical sophomore-level Chemistry class. Not only that, but according to the MIT course evaluations, Schrock is considered one of the best teachers in the Chemistry department, routinely receiving very high ratings. That Schrock is a good teacher wasnt a huge surprise to me. As I often talk about, Prof. Wolfgang Ketterle (Nobel Laureate 2001) taught me freshman physics, and he was a great professor. Hes helping to teach the course again this term, and even has office hours to help students. Nobel Prize week also means the coming of Ig Nobel Prize week, brought to you by the folks at the Annals of Improbable Research and hosted by Harvard and MIT. Ig Nobel prizes are awarded to, um, interesting scientific research. Last year prizes went for the following projects: the scientific validity of the Five-Second Rule The American Nudist Research Library the invention of karaoke the patenting of the combover and lots of other interesting/ridiculous projects, including my favorite, the basketball video (take a look!). Tonight is my penultimate Central Meeting of the year, in San Luis Obispo, CA. Should be a small and intimate meeting. Soon, look for further travel updates and a Questions Omnibus. Happy Nobel Week! EDIT: MIT has announced a lecture by Prof. Schrock today at 4pm. From my years of experience at MIT during Nobel week, I recommend getting there very early. MIT has also posted Real Video streaming webcast of the MIT press conference. You can also watch the webcast of the Prize announcement.

Chinas energy productio - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 686 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/10/30 Category Energy Industry Essay Level High school Tags: Solar Energy Essay Did you like this example? Chinas energy production intensely depends on coal and while there are a lot of pros that come with coal, there are also a lot of cons that are so significant that it has to be changed. In China because they have a big coal supply, nearly 80% of its power generation originate from coal (ChinaFAQs). This has a lot different factors. This essay is analyzing different factors of why Solar Energy is the best source of energy production in China. The pros and cons will be evaluated and justified further with arguments and verification. Body Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Chinas energy productio" essay for you Create order Coal is served with an abundant supply, which is concentrated in industrialized countries, which helps China a lot (TriplePundit). It is also very cheap compared to alternative energy sources like solar energy. Another pro of coal in China is that the clean coal technology is being used in China. Clean Coal says that it doesnt enter the atmosphere but so far it didnt have great success and is not safe for the environment(InsideEnergy). Clean coal is also not carbon free. The problem of using coal in fossil fuel power generation is that coal is a non-reusable energy source. Coal is also responsible for more than the quarter of the nations global warming emissions. It has very significant and harmful consequences to the environment and coal mining degrades the surrounding landscapes. Burning coal releases a lot of toxic substances into the atmosphere, while coal produced power puts substantial requests on water assets. Everything signifies a gigantic and expensive effect. Another aspect of using coal is that it isnt very healthy because coal emissions are linked to increase the rate of asthma and especially lung cancer and burning coal emits mercury and and other very heavy metals that could potentially present major health risks and issues. Coal produces electricity by thermal coal which is either black or brown and also has been pulverised to a fine powder, is burned. The heat that results gets is utilized to transform the water into steam. The steam with high pressure is then used to turn a turbine, associated with an electrical generator. Then the spinning turbine makes expansive magnets to turn within copper wire coils, also called the generator. The moving magnets then cause electrons in the wires to move starting with one place then onto the next, creating an electrical current and producing a lot of electricity. The alternative energy source is Solar Energy which is a renewable energy generator. Solar energy can be harnessed everywhere in the world and is available for everyone every day. This could also be a huge advantage for China, fixing their problems with pollution and coal. Another advantage of solar energy is that it has diverse applications. It can be either used for heat (solar thermal) or to generate electricity (Photovoltaics). Solar energy can also produce energy in places where there is no energy grid. When you generate electricity with solar energy, you also save a lot of electricity bills depending on the size of the solar system and the usage of electricity. If you generate more electricity than you use, the surplus made will be exported back to the grid and you will receive extra payments. Solar energy has very low maintenance costs and solar energy is constantly developed in Technology, which means improvements will intensify in the future. One of the cons of Solar Energy is that it has a high initial cost. This incorporates paying for solar panels, batteries, inverter and wirings. Although this is a negative, solar energy is developing, so the price will go down accordingly. Solar energy pollutes far less than other alternative sources, but it still pollutes. Transportation and establishment of solar panels have been related to the emission of greenhouse gases. There are also some toxic materials used during the process of generating electricity. Toxic materials are a danger for the environment as citizens could be affected by getting lung cancer or other death threatening diseases. Another con of Solar Energy is that it is weather dependent, but not so heavily that it affects a lot during the generation of electricity.

La Venta Olmec Archaeology site La Venta
The La Venta is an archaeological site in the Mexican State of Tabasco. At the site are the partially excavated ruins of an Olmec city which thrived from approximately 900-400 B.C. before being abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. La Venta is a very important Olmec site and many interesting and significant artifacts have been found there, including four of the famous Olmec colossal heads. The Olmec Civilization The Ancient Olmec were the first major civilization in Mesoamerica, and as such are considered the parent culture of other societies that came later, including the Maya and Aztec. They were gifted artists and sculptors who are best remembered today for their massive colossal heads. They were also talented engineers and traders. They had a well-developed religion and interpretation of the cosmos, complete with gods and mythology. Their first great city was San Lorenzo, but the city declined and around 900 A.D. the center of Olmec civilization became La Venta. For centuries, La Venta spread Olmec culture and influence throughout Mesoamerica. When La Ventas glory faded and the city declined around 400 B.C., Olmec culture died with it, although a post-Olmec culture thrived at the site of Tres Zapotes. Even once the Olmec were gone, their gods, beliefs and artistic styles survived in other Mesoamerican cultures whose turn for greatness was yet to come. La Venta at its Peak From about 900 to 400 A.D., La Venta was the greatest city in Mesoamerica, far greater than any of its contemporaries. A man-made mountain towered over the ridge at the heart of the city where priests and rulers carried out elaborate ceremonies. Thousands of common Olmec citizens labored tending crops in the fields, catching fish in the rivers or moving great blocks of stone to the Olmec workshops for carving. Skilled sculptors produced colossal heads and thrones weighing many tons as well as finely polished jadeite celts, axe heads, beads and other pretty things. Olmec traders crossed Mesoamerica from Central America to the Valley of Mexico, returning with bright feathers, jadeite from Guatemala, cacao from the Pacific coast and obsidian for weapons, tools and adornments. The city itself covered an area of 200 hectares and its influence spread much further. The Royal Compound La Venta was built on a ridge alongside the Palma River. At the top of the ridge are a series of complexes collectively referred to as the Royal Compound because it is believed that the ruler of La Venta lived there with his family. The royal compound is the most important part of the site and many important objects have been unearthed there. The royal compound - and the city itself - is dominated by Complex C, a man-made mountain built of many tons of earth. It was once pyramidal in shape, but the centuries - and some unwelcome interference from nearby oil operations in the 1960s - have turned Complex C into a shapeless hill. On the northern side is Complex A, a burial ground and important religious area (see below). On the other side, Complex B is a large area where thousands of common Olmecs could gather to witness ceremonies taking place on Complex C. The royal compound is completed by the Stirling Acropolis, a raised platform with two mounds: it is believed that the royal reside nce was once located here. Complex A Complex A is bordered on the south by Complex C and on the north by three massive colossal heads, clearly setting this area aside as a privileged zone for the most important citizens of La Venta. Complex A is the most complete ceremonial center to have survived from Olmec times and the discoveries made there redefined modern knowledge of the Olmec. Complex A was evidently a sacred place where burials took place (five tombs have been found) and people gave gifts to the gods. There are five massive offerings here: deep pits filled with serpentine stones and colored clay before being topped with serpentine mosaics and earthen mounds. Numerous smaller offerings have been found, including a set of figurines known as small dedicatory offering four. Numerous statues and stonecarvings were located here. Scuplture and Art at La Venta La Venta is a treasure trove of Olmec art and sculpture. At least 90 stone monuments have been discovered there including some of the most important pieces of Olmec art. Four colossal heads ââ¬â out of a total of seventeen known to exist ââ¬â were discovered here. There are several massive thrones at La Venta: huge blocks of stone brought from many miles away, carved on the sides and meant to be sat or stood upon by rulers or priests. Some of the more important pieces include Monument 13, nicknamed ââ¬Å"the Ambassador,â⬠which may contain some of the earliest glyphs recorded in Mesoamerica and Monument 19, a skillful depiction of a warrior and a feathered serpent. Stela 3 shows two rulers facing one another while 6 figures ââ¬â spirits? ââ¬â swirl overhead. Decline of La Venta Ultimately La Ventas influence petered out and the city went into decline around 400 B.C. Eventually the site was abandoned altogether and reclaimed by the jungle: it would remain lost for centuries. Fortunately, the Olmecs covered up much of Complex A with clay and earth before the city was abandoned: this would preserve important objects for discovery in the twentieth century. With the fall of La Venta, Olmec civilization faded as well. It survived somewhat in a post-Olmec phase referred to as the Epi-Olmec: the center of this age was the city of Tres Zapotes. The Olmec people did not all die out: their descendants would return to greatness in the Classic Veracruz culture. Importance La Venta The Olmec culture is very mysterious yet very important for archaeologists and modern-day researchers. It is mysterious because, having disappeared over 2,000 years ago, much information about them has been irrevocably lost. It is important because as the parent culture of Mesoamerica, its influence on the later development of the region is immeasurable. La Venta, along with San Lorenzo, Tres Zapotes and El Manatà , is one of the four most important Olmec sites known to exist. The information gleaned from Complex A alone is priceless. Although the site isnt particularly spectacular for tourists and visitors - if you want breathtaking temples and buildings, go to Tikal or Teotihuacà ¡n - any archaeologist will tell you its just as important. Curleys Wife Free Essays
Exam Practice ââ¬â C. A. T On Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife. We will write a custom essay sample on Curleys Wife or any similar topic only for you Order Now In this essay, I will explain the character of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife having looked at, we can see John Steinbeck portrays Curleyââ¬â¢s wife as being a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢ but also a nice woman. She is a natural flirt as throughout the novel she continues to talk to all the other men on the farm, but when she dies, we see her as an innocent woman. Steinbeck uses many different techniques to present Curleyââ¬â¢s wife such as colour imagery, appearance, metaphors and similes in the early stages of the novel. The effect of these techniques is that the reader creates a mental image of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife even before she even enters the novel. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife gives off the impression she is a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢ and a ââ¬Ëfloozyââ¬â¢ throughout the novel. When readers first read about her, her body language is provocative when she leans against a wall in the barn. ââ¬Å"Oh! She put her hands behind e=ger back and leaned against the door frame so her body was thrown forward, youââ¬â¢re the new fellas that just come, ainââ¬â¢t ya? , being the only woman on the farm, this reveals her need to be noticed and admired by the men. She talks very confidently and flirtatiously to George and Lennie even though they have just arrived on the farm and she doesnââ¬â¢t know them. She pretends to be looking for her husband and when told that he is not there Steinbeck writes ââ¬Å"If he ainââ¬â¢t, I guess I better look some place elseâ⬠she said playfully.? This shows her bored om in marriage with Curley and that she just want attention from the men on the farm. Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is first presented to us through the dialogue of ranch-hand Candy, when he describes her to George. Candyââ¬â¢s opinion is very sexist towards Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, you only hear the menââ¬â¢s opinion on Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife. He also says ââ¬Å"Curleyââ¬â¢s married . . . a tartâ⬠which shows how Steinbeck wants to present Curleyââ¬â¢s wife which is in a very crude manner. He uses expressions such as ââ¬Å"she got the eyeâ⬠and goes on to describe her as looking at other men, before eventually calling her a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢. The word ââ¬Å"tartâ⬠which shows the impression and effect Curleyââ¬â¢s wife has on other men on the ranch. Steinbeck wanted to use this effect because he wants to show the reader the immediate impression the men have about Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. This further supports my point that Steinbeck presents Curleyââ¬â¢s wife in a negative manner. The effect of this is that the reader has judge Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife without her speaking in the novel. One the one hand, Steinbeck uses the colour red to describe Curleyââ¬â¢s wife which explores ideas of danger, strong and bold. The quote ââ¬Å" She had full rouged lips.. her fingernails red.. she wore a cotton house dress and red mules of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathersâ⬠. This shows how she makes the effort and dresses to attract sexual attraction from the men on the farm which makes readers think sheââ¬â¢s a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢. On the other hand, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wifeââ¬â¢s appearance could be seen as naive and youthful desire to be found attractive. Red is bright and has an element of happiness to it. Therefore she might not be wearing the colour red to stand out and to look like a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢. How to cite Curleys Wife, Papers Curleys Wife Free Essays Mediums by which she is presented to the reader by Steinbeck is by how she is described by both the characters and Steinbeck, what she is wearing and her body language when she is with the workers, her actions with the characters and what she says (the hidden meaning of what she says). One of the ways the reader can learn about a Character is through the other Characters description and their opinion of that character, in the case of Curlersââ¬â¢ Wife the first we hear of her is from Crooks, the old swamped, when he is talking to George during a game of cards. He states, ââ¬Å"she got the eyeâ⬠which shows that she is a flirtatious and an immoral woman because she has only been married for two weeks. We will write a custom essay sample on Curleys Wife or any similar topic only for you Order Now Candy also describes her as a ââ¬Å"tartâ⬠(a tart is a woman who dresses or behaves in a way that is considered tasteless and sexually provocative). The fact that Curlersââ¬â¢ Wife is introduced through rumors means that the reader has a biased impression of her. Already the reader has been introduced to the idea that Curlersââ¬â¢ Wife is a ââ¬Ëtartâ⬠and an immoral flirtatious woman. This idea is the further strengthened by 1st appearance. Her first appearance of the story is made in the doorway of the bunkhouse, asking the whereabouts of her husband which is revealed to be a weak excuse to make interaction with the workers. She is wearing ââ¬Å"red cotton house dress and red mules, on the instep of which were little bouquets of red strict feathers. â⬠Emphasizing her sexual presence with the color red, but the emphasis of the color red also shows danger because the color red is sometimes associated with danger, which shows she is a dangerous character. Additionally, the bouquets of ostrich feathers, also described as red, on the insteps of her shoes would have been extremely expensive in the time which ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠was set; and that Curlersââ¬â¢ Wife not only wears them on her feet but in the middle of the ââ¬ËDust Bowlââ¬â¢ expresses her desperate need for attention and she is willing to ruin her best pair of shows in order to main he attention of the workers, despite the fact she has a husband. Our image of Curlers wife being immoral women in then further reinforced when she Starts talking to George,â⬠ââ¬ËOh! She put her hands behind her back and leaned against the door frame so that her body was thrown forward. â⬠Not only is Cur lessââ¬â¢ Wife described as a floozy but also a dangerous woman. Upon entering Crooksââ¬â¢ room it is clear that Candy and Crooks are afraid of her when they both ââ¬Å"scowled down from her eyesâ⬠this deliberate prevention of eye contact suggest that they are scared of her or they donââ¬â¢t feel as if they need to dignify her with eye contact. The word ââ¬Å"scowlingââ¬â¢ means that the presence of her displeases Candy and Crooks. In the story we know that both Crooks and Curlersââ¬â¢ Wife are similar in more the one way both are obviously intelligent and perceptive of themselves as well as others, and both contain a deep bitterness stemming from their mistreatment. Both contain a bleak and accurate insight of the fundamental nastiness of people and they are discriminated (When she threatens to get him hung ââ¬Å"l could get so strung so quickly it ant even funnyââ¬â¢ and isolated (In the novella there are many quotes to show that Candyââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ Wife is a lonely Oman ââ¬Å"l never get to talk to nobody. Et awful lonely. â⬠ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the matter with me? Anti I got a right to talk to nobody? â⬠ââ¬Å"Seems like they anti none Of them cares how goat liveâ⬠. ) In the novella she is also linked to The American Dream (Dictionary Definition: is the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved. Because she is talking to Leonie about what happened to her before she get married (this shows that even though she is married and has a husband to talk to SE still rise to talk to the workers, but it also shows a vulnerable side of her it tells us that maybe she doesnââ¬â¢t get to talk much at her house that she has bad relationship). She reveals that her mother denied her the opportunity to join a traveling show (â⬠I always thought my 01â⬠² lady stole itâ⬠) when she was fifteen and then, years later, a talent SCOUt spotted her and promised to take her to Hollywood to become a movie star. When nothing came of it, she decided to marry Curler, whom she dislikes. ââ¬Å"Well, I wasnââ¬â¢t goanna stay no place where I couldnââ¬â¢t get nowhere or make something of myself, anââ¬â¢ where they stole your teetersâ⬠This tells she left home because she believed and her mother was denying her of her dream and she only married Curler to get away from her mother which leads to question Does she have a good relationship with her husband? Curly is arrogant We know he is arrogant because in the novella he picks with the biggest worker there (Leonie) believing that he has enough strength to take down the biggest worker ââ¬Å"Come on, yea big bastard Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitchy is goanna laugh at meâ⬠Curler is deliberately shouting at Leonie because he thinks he can win because of his arrogance. His wife is a flirt and definitely lacks the attention (the right kind of attention) she should receive from her husband. Sheââ¬â¢s a trophy, and he treats her as such. They had a short engagement (they married the night they met), and Curlersââ¬â¢ wife, from the little we really know about her married Curly for little more than to get away from her mother. Curly and his wife have a very unstable marriage, lacking in communication, love and respect. Curly believes that manipulation, intimidation, and insensitivity provide him with power over a wife who is fact just a lonely, young woman who needs to be loved. Not to et the wife off the hook here; Curlersââ¬â¢ wife is far from stupid. She likes the money and the nice house; she never tries to leave him. But she also holds some power in their relationship. Curly wife possessed his mind, and as Iââ¬â¢ve already stated heââ¬â¢s very jealous. Being the only woman on the ranch, Curly is even more worried about her behavior with the men who work thereâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ If he didnââ¬â¢t know where she was for even a minute, he was off looking for her. Example;â⬠You seen a girl around here? â⬠he demanded angrily. â⬠She made him crazy and enjoyed it. So ultimately, neither one of them are very happy itââ¬â¢s a pretty unhealthy relationship. Biotechnology Genetically Modified Foods Essay Example For Students
Biotechnology: Genetically Modified Foods Essay Throughout the advancing technology of today, human culture is becoming revolutionary with science and all of its components. Genetically modifying foods presents positive opportunities in agriculture and human health. Furthermore, more scientifically advanced modifications that select genetically superior plants, have enhanced the yield of crops, improved storability, and increased disease resistance. To simply remove genes from one organism and transfer them to another is generally harmless if we take appropriate precautions. This often debated issue holds many objections. Moreover, one may claim that modifying genes at all is unnatural and evaluates a sufficient risk to many different organisms and species. However, the current technology we possess provides us with the capabilities to go beyond our limits. Why draw the line here? Genetically modifying foods presents positive and beneficial opportunities. In most cases, we are not eating those genes. By the time a genetically engineered corn plant has been processed into corn oil, virtually none of the genes or the proteins they produce is left in the food. Transferring genes from one plant or animal to another provides an advantageous outcome to this production. A better resistance to weeds, pests, and diseases is produced as well as better yield and a more efficient use of land. Additionally, altering genetics in foods contributes to a better texture, flavor, and nutritional value of a product. Therefore, there is a longer shelf life and less herbicide or other chemicals are used in the production of genetically modified foods, which provides a healthier option and an increased selection for the consumer. Biotechnology is going to help solve problems that we face going into the next century such as reduction of allergies, development of more nutritious foods, and an increased nutritional production to feed a growing population. Subsequently, changing one or two genes does not make a food unacceptable. Religious and vegetarian groups would object to genes from some species, while adequate protection can be given with labeling the product. Ethically, one may argue that it is radically useless to modify foods genetically or that agriculture is already too technological and it will only progress more negatively. However, it is likely that increasing numbers of genetically modified foods will emerge in the near future with more variety of modifications and associated benefits. Generally, genetically modified foods will affect the lives of most people in the areas of food, medicine, and environmental protection as it meets the modern technology of today. This advancing technology requires careful regulations to ensure that there is no threat to human health in introducing this production system. Proper labeling, accurate product information, and the provision of species are some of the measures that one can review as a means of ensuring public confidence in the safety of genetically modified foods. Additionally, this is also effective as a means of providing those with objections to the technology with a means of avoiding these foods. Fundamentally, by altering the genes of specie for the benefit of human race and its development is simply not changing the rules in life, but rather it allows us to progress into a new revolution of advancements for the future. .

Canons of Taxation free essay sample
A good tax system is one which is designed on the basis of an appropriate set of principles (rules). The tax system should strike a balance between the interest of the taxpayer and that of tax authorities. Adam Smith was the first economist to develop a list of Canons of Taxation. These canons are still regarded as characteristics or features of a good tax system. Adam Smith gave following four important canons of taxation. 1. Canon of Equity The principle aims at providing economic and social justice to the people. According to this principle, every person should pay to the government depending upon his ability to pay. The rich class people should pay higher taxes to the government, because without the protection of the government authorities (Police, Defence, etc. ) they could not have earned and enjoyed their income. Adam Smith argued that the taxes should be proportional to income, i. e. , citizens should pay the taxes in proportion to the revenue which they respectively enjoy under the protection of the state. We will write a custom essay sample on Canons of Taxation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 2. Canon of Certainty According to Adam Smith, the tax which an individual has to pay should be certain, not arbitrary. The tax payer should know in advance how much tax he has to pay, at what time he has to pay the tax, and in what form the tax is to be paid to the government. In other words, every tax should satisfy the canon of certainty. At the same time a good tax system also ensures that the government is also certain about the amount that will be collected by way of tax. 3. Canon of Convenience The mode and timing of tax payment should be as far as possible, convenient to the tax payers. For example, land revenue is collected at time of harvest income tax is deducted at source. Convenient tax system will encourage people to pay tax and will increase tax revenue. 4. Canon of Economy This principle states that there should be economy in tax administration. The cost of tax collection should be lower than the amount of tax collected. It may not serve any purpose, if the taxes imposed are widespread but are difficult to administer. Therefore, it would make no sense to impose certain taxes, if it is difficult to administer. Additional Canons of Taxation v Activities and functions of the government have increased significantly since Adam Smiths time. Government are expected to maintain economic stability, full employment, reduce income inequality amp; promote growth and development. Tax system should be such that it meets the requirements of growing state activities. Accordingly, modern economists gave following additional canons of taxation. 5. Canon of Productivity It is also known as the canon of fiscal adequacy. According to this principle, the tax system should be able to yield enough revenue for the treasury and the government should have no need to resort to deficit financing. This is a good principle to follow in a developing economy. 6. Canon of Elasticity According to this canon, every tax imposed by the government should be elastic in nature. In other words, the income from tax should be capable of increasing or decreasing according to the requirement of the country. For example, if the government needs more income at time of crisis, the tax should be capable of yielding more income through increase in its rate. . Canon of Flexibility It should be easily possible for the authorities to revise the tax structure both with respect to its coverage and rates, to suit the changing requirements of the economy. With changing time and conditions the tax system needs to be changed without much difficulty. The tax system must be flexible and not rigid. 8. Canon of Simplicity The tax system shoul d not be complicated. That makes it difficult to understand and administer and results in problems of interpretation and disputes. In India, the efforts of the government in recent years have been to make the system simple. 9. Canon of Diversity This principle states that the government should collect taxes from different sources rather than concentrating on a single source of tax. It is not advisable for the government to depend upon a single source of tax, it may result in inequity to the certain section of the society; uncertainty for the government to raise funds. If the tax revenue comes from diversified source, then any reduction in tax revenue on account of any one cause is bound to be small.

There are a few caveats, though: You must make a change prior to the Silver Zone registration deadline for the exam for which youre currently registered. You cant change your test date before registration has opened for the new exam date as no special permissions or privileges are granted in registration order to previously registered testers.Rescheduling into an exam date that is within the Bronze Zone will cost you an additional $50. This fee is the difference between the initial Silver Zone registration fee ($275) and the initial Bronze Zone registration fee ($325). Cancel Your MCAT Registration Lets say youre called away on military duty. Or, heaven forbid, theres a death in your immediate family. Or, youve decided that you dont want to take the MCAT on your registered date and youre not sure when (or if!) youd like to register again. What can you do? If theres no emergency- youd just like to cancel for your own personal reasons- then here are the details: You must cancel before the end of the Gold Zone registration deadline in order to receive a partial refund- $135 for standard testers and $50 for FAP recipients. If you cancel after the Gold Zone registration deadline, you will not receive a refund at all! So youd better make sure youd really like to cancel. If you decide to register for a new test date in the same calendar year in which youve canceled, then youll have to pay the entire registration fee again, along with a rescheduling fee, which is nonrefundable. If youve experienced a crisis like being hospitalized or having a death in the family OR youre called away on military duty or to help medically in a catastrophic event, then you can receive a maximum of $135 no matter when the cancellation occurs. If youre a FAP recipient, youll receive a $50 cancellation reimbursement. Youll need to contact the MCAT Resource Center either by phone (202) 828-0690 or by email at mcataamc.org for instructions regarding canceling during a crisis. Please note that youll be required to provide either military papers explaining the dates of your deployment and length of service, a funeral program or death certificate, or medical documentation explaining the duration of your hospital stay. Make an MCAT Registration Change Here If youve decided you need to change your MCAT registration for any reason, you can log into the MCAT Scheduling and Registration System to make the necessary adjustments to your testing experience.

Establish an International Business in Frontier Market Research Paper
Establish an International Business in Frontier Market - Research Paper Example As it is, the value chain extends from the coffee growers at the extensive large scale farm and small scale farms, to the factory for drying and husking and to the millers who take over the grinding process. The unpacked coffee goes through the sorting process at the millers that is supervised by the coffee board of Kenya for quality and grading purposes. Marketing agents then take over the sales process. This is the likely scenario where the company can come in. The selling is done through either direct sale by highly unregulated but established and networked brokers who then sell the coffee to the overseas buyers or through auctions at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange that are well regulated by the Kenya Coffee Traders Association. Coffee exporters in Kenya opt for the auction procedure because of its associated transparency in pricing. The company would also pursue this option as it seeks to break into the coffee export business in Kenya. Global coffee consumption is on the rise thus boosting demand. Global demand has also been increased by other increasing uses of coffee especially in the medical field that were previously unknown. The increasing global demand of the product provides an international business opportunity for the company. Kenya is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Its strategic geographical location makes it a suitable location for conducting an export business. The country also has a relatively calm political environment compared to other frontier markets in Africa. Turbulence was experienced in the 2007 elections but a new constitution dispensation and the increased democratic space has seen the country claim the bragging rights as one of the most mature democracies in Africa. The prevailing stable political environment creates a favorable investment climate for international investors (Hill 214). As the

Evolutionary development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Evolutionary development - Essay Example The view is given a new paradigm by Neil Shubin, (2008), a principal paleontologist who discerned the "missing link". He tried to trace the evolution through organs of human body. In his book Your Inner Fish, Shubin has enlightened people by establishing correlation between fossils and DNA. There exists similarity between human hands and fins of fish. Through his outstanding inscription, Shubin has elucidated the process of evolution in an easy manner which an ordinary person can understand. Your Inner Fish is one of the most invigorating, intellectually articulated thoughts, and convincing systematic scientific explorations; it is a chronicle of true voyage, potentially changes the outlook about the human body. Your Inner Fish establishes the similarity between the humans and fish and elucidate that any human body is a live example of the whole narration of evolution. Human body possess genome links that is already an established fact but humans also depict the whole gamut of evolution which finds molecular basis too with the similarity in terms of DNAs and RNAs in the genes. Shubin is not only an eminent scientist but he has proved his worth in the form of coherent and stylish author, besides being an irrepressibly excited coach who possesses wittiness, aptitude and cleverness who mesmerizes the readers with his thoughts and therefore readers are able to understand and formulate a real picture of the evolution. One of the finest ways to teach the students the similarity between various animals and humans. The simplest roadmap to their lies in fish (Shubin, 2008). "The archives of natural history are filled with â⬠¦ cases of species formation exploding as a response to ecological opportunity.â⬠¦Natural history becomes all the more pleasing and interesting when we look at it through the lens of evolutionary theory and search for the

Reflective Skills Essay
Reflective Skills Essay Reflective Skills Essay Do people develop professional skills only at their workplace? I would be writing about the skills and knowledge I have gained in the last 10 15 years. You dont have to work in an organization to gain skills and knowledge. Even while at home you can learn something that might help you at your workplace. Sometimes people dont realize that they have developed skills that can be used effectively in their workplace. In this essay I am going explain the skills and knowledge I have developed through work, education and other activities how this could help me in a workplace. First Im going to talk about the skills I have developed from my hobbies and day to day activities. Its actually surprising to know how much you can learn while having fun. After that Im going to talk about the skills I am developing academically at present. Playing cricket is one of my biggest hobbies and as a cricketer I am a wicket keeper. Being a wicket keeper, my role isnt just to collect missed deliveries and score runs but is also to motivate and inspire the team every minute so that my team members dont get sluggish in their respective roles and perform towards success. Once familiarized with the team I can act as a good motivator. This skill can not only help me to motivate other employees in my workplace but it also gives me the ability to work with little or no supervision as I can motivate myself to work towards achieving my goal. In todays workplace, team leaders have to encourage and motivate their teams in order to perform well. A strong motivator can act as the backbone of the team. This skill is one of the essentials required to be a good leader in any kind of workplace. Employers are also looking out for people with creative minds. By nature I am a very creative person. I look at things in a very different prospective. Usually I would take an original idea and expand upon it using my creativity, which can also sometimes lead to something else completely new. It has to do with thinking beyond the obvious. This is the secret to how the minds of creative people work. For instance, with music, the first type of genre was baroque music played during the 1600s and from that evolved a lot different genres. In todays date we have more than 400 music genres. This was possible only because of some creative minds who thought of doing things differently. Employers want their employees to have the ability to solve problems using their creativity and reasoning skills. An innovative problem solver can take an organization, irrespective from which industry, to the next level. One of my other favorite hobbies is travelling and I would often find myself in a situation of convincing some friends to come along. Usually I would succeed 9 out of 10 times, as they say I always manage to get things my way. This can also be called the art of diplomacy. Now having employees with the ability to persuade people can be very useful for an organization as they can face situations in which they might have to persuade a client or a trade union to reach an agreement. This skill can also be related to the sales ability of an employee. Travelling has also shown me that I can be a responsible person as I would make all the plans in detail, do the math for the expenses to be occurred, make sure every one is having a good trip and everything else is under control. One of the basic yet most important skills is to communicate effectively with other people. Everyone has been naturally practicing this skill since they were able to speak, listen or write, yet communication gap between the employers and employees still seems to be one of the major concerns in many organizations. In order to have a productive workplace, they should always be effective communication between the employee and employer. Successful communication is critical in business. I have developed good communication skills over the time. I can easily converse and make the other person understand and communicate with me either verbally or written. Along with this my listening skills are good as I listen to the other person patiently and then engage in communication with what that other person was speaking about. I can improve upon this skill by practicing more. A few other basic skills that I have acquired are computing and numeracy. Schools in India never allowed the use of calculators. I always wondered why we couldnt use calculators while schools across the world were allowed, but now when I look back, I realize why. Doing basic calculations mentally, without the use of a calculator has helped me sharpen my numeracy skill. Each day, people use simple math skills in their jobs and personal live in order to complete projects and other job duties. A recent large scale survey in the UK showed that people who have better literacy and numeracy skills tend to have better wages and come to work more often. One way of improving this skill is by avoiding the calculator when whenever a need of calculation arises. My interest in IT has enabled me to carry out all the basic computing tasks at ease. I always had an interest for it and I utilized everything taught at school like Web designing, HTML, QBASIC, SQL and a lot more. Almost every job now requires some basic understanding of computer hardware and software, especially word processing, spreadsheets, and email. Lack of IT knowledge can affect the performance and future prospects of an employee. While I did my schooling in India, our knowledge gained was always tested in the unseen exam format. After joining university I was exposed to new tasks like conducting presentations and writing report. When I was first assigned to conduct a presentation I was a bit nervous as I had never done this before in front of people I dint know. Later I was advised to practice in front of a mirror and it did work. My second presentation went better than the first. Being able to conduct a presentation with confidence is a very important skill to develop especially in the field of HR. One effective way by which I can improve upon this skill is by preparing my self well in advance so that I dont get nervous and referring to books and articles relating to improving presentation skills Another skill I developed while conducting presentations and writing reports in university is Teamwork. Working in teams is probably one of the most vital skills required to succeed in a workplace, especially with regard to how you communicate with the people you work with. 9 out of 10 jobs require you to work with teams. Working in teams with a diverse group of people has helped me understand how to communicate with my different co-workers and understand their views when solving a problem. Teamwork has a lot of benefits to offer, one of it being it helps to generate a lot of different ideas which leads to a creative solution and it definitely speeds up the process. Having more projects involving teamwork will surely prepare me once I start working at a professional level where my skill would be tested. Since Ive started an independent life after shifting to the UK I learnt how to be organized. Being organized has a lot of benefits attached to it. It has proven to be both cost and time effective. It also helps to boost confidence and give more energy to work. Employers would love to have all their employees being organized in their work.

Comparing Stanislavski and Brechtââ¬â¢s Acting Techniques
Comparing Stanislavski and Brechtââ¬â¢s acting techniques Early life Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, Bavaria. On the 10th February 1898 Brecht's home life was comfortably middle class, despite his occasional attempt to claim peasant origins. Thanks to his mother's influence, Brecht knew the Bible, a familiarity that would impact on his writing throughout his life. From her, too, came the ââ¬Å"dangerous image of the self-denying womanâ⬠that recurs in his drama. When he was 16, the First World War broke out.Fearing persecution, Brecht left Germany in February 1933, when Hitler later took power. Stanislavski was born in Moscow on the 17th on januray 1863. Stanislavski had a privileged youth, growing up in one of the richest families in Russia, the Alekseyevs. He was born Constantin Sergeyevich Alexeyev ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Stanislavskiâ⬠was a stage name that he adopted in 1884 in order to keep his performance activities secret from his parents. As a child, Stanislavski was exposed to the rich cultural life of his family. His interests included the circus, the ballet, and puppetry.Increasingly interested in ââ¬Å"living the part,â⬠Stanislavski experimented with the ability to maintain a characterization in real life, disguising himself as a tramp or drunk and visiting the railway station, or disguising himself as a fortune-telling gypsy. Techniques Brecht remained a lifelong committed Marxist who, in developing the combined theory and practice of his epic theatre-Epic Theatre proposed that a play should not cause the spectator to identify emotionally with the characters or action before him or her, but should instead provoke rational self-reflection and a critical view of the action on the stage.Brecht thought that the experience of emotion left an audience complacent. Instead, he wanted his audiences to adopt a critical perspective in order to recognise social injustice and exploitation and to be moved to go forth from the theatre and effec t change in the world outside. For this purpose, Brecht employed the use of techniques that remind the spectator that the play is a representation of reality and not reality itself. By highlighting the constructed nature of the theatrical event, Brecht hoped to communicate that the audience's reality was equally constructed and, as such, was changeable. The distancing effect is achieved by the way the ââ¬Å"artist never acts as if there were a fourth wall besides the three surrounding him. The audience can no longer have the illusion of being the unseen spectator at an event which is really taking place. â⬠The use of direct audience-address is one way of disrupting stage illusion and generating the distancing effect. In performance, as the performer ââ¬Å"observes himself,â⬠his objective is ââ¬Å"to appear strange and even surprising to the audience. He achieves this by looking strangely at himself and his work.Whether Brecht intended the distancing effect to refer to the audience or to the actor or to both audience and actor is still controversial among teachers and scholars of ââ¬Å"Epic Actingâ⬠and Brechtian theatre. By disclosing and making obvious the manipulative contrivances and ââ¬Å"fictiveâ⬠qualities of the medium, the viewer is alienated from any passive acceptance and enjoyment of the play as mere ââ¬Å"entertainment. â⬠Instead, the viewer is forced into a critical, analytical frame of mind that serves to disabuse him of the notion that what he is watching is necessarily an inviolable, self-contained narrative. This effect of making the familiar strange serves a didactic function insofar as it teaches the viewer not to take the style and content for granted, since the medium itself is highly constructed and contingent upon many cultural and economic conditions Stanislavski's ââ¬Ësystem' is a systematic approach to training actors. Areas of study include concentration, voice, physical skills, emotion memory, obse rvation, and dramatic analysis. Stanislavski's goal was to find a universally applicable approach that could be of service to all actors. Yet he said of his system: ââ¬Å"Create your own method.Don't depend slavishly on mine. Make up something that will work for you! But keep breaking traditions, I beg you. â⬠Many actors routinely identify his system with the American Method, although the latter's exclusively psychological techniques contrast sharply with Stanislavski's multivariant, holistic and psychophysical approach, which explores character and action both from the ââ¬Ëinside out' and the ââ¬Ëoutside in'. Emotion memory-Stanislavski's ââ¬Ësystem' focused on the development of artistic truth onstage by teaching actors to ââ¬Å"experience the partâ⬠during performance.Stanislavski hoped that the ââ¬Ësystem' could be applied to all forms of drama, including melodrama, vaudeville, and opera. He organised a series of theatre studios in which young actors wer e trained in his ââ¬Ësystem. ââ¬Ë At the First Studio, actors were instructed to use their own memories in order to express emotion. Stanislavski soon observed that some of the actors using or abusing this technique were given to hysteria. He began to search for more reliable means to access emotion, eventually emphasizing the actor's use of imagination and belief in the given circumstances of the text rather than her/his private and often painful memories. The Method of Physical Actions- In the beginning, Stanislavski proposed that actors study and experience subjective emotions and feelings and manifest them to audiences by physical and vocal means. While in its very earliest stages his ââ¬Ësystem' focused on creating truthful emotions and embodying them, he later worked on the Method of Physical Actions. This was developed at the Opera Dramatic Studio from the early 1930s. Its focus was on physical actions as a means to access truthful emotion, and involved improvisation. The focus remained on reaching the subconscious through the conscious.

Buy-Grid model Essay
Supplier Evaluation An important job of the purchasing agent is to evaluate potential suppliers and their offerings. The effects of purchasing on a firmââ¬â¢s competitive ability are great, so companies pay close attention to how they evaluate suppliers. Marketers must also understand the process, for them the ones being evaluated. Understand the process is like understand the rules of any games; if you donââ¬â¢t know how to score, you are unlikely to win. The buy-grid model is a version of a theory developed as a general model of rational organization decision making, explain how companies make decisions about, for example, where to locate a plant or make a purchase. The buy grid model has two parts: the buy-phase model and the buy class. The buy-phase model in a management class as the rational or extensive problem solving model or in consumer behavior as high-involvement model. Buy -phase model suggests that people go through a series of steps (or phrases) when making a decision, beginning with problem recognition. Then they search for alternatives, evaluate alternatives, and select a solution, which are them implemented and evaluated. For example, when an organization needs new office space, crowded conditions help force recognition of the need. The next step is to define the type of product needed: Does the organization want to build a new office building, add on to an existing building, or simply find a larger place to rent or buy? As the organization continues to examine its needs, detailed specifications such as the size and number of offices are created. If the decision in the second step was to build on, an architect would help create specifications drawing plans. Then suppliers would be contracted, included those recommended by architect. Step 5, acquisition and analysis of proposals, involves receiving and reviewing bids from each contractor. The architect and the executives would meet, evaluate the proposals, and selectà a contractor (step 6). Step 7 involves the creations of a contract specifying when the building will be completed, what it will look like, and when the payment will be made. Evaluation begins as the project begins, but continues well after the organization moves in. As observers of buying behavior quickly realized, many organizational purchase decisions do not involve that much work or include each and every step every time. A second element, the buy-class, was added, resulting in the grid. Buy-class refers to the type of buying decision, based on the experience of the buyer with a purchase of a particular product or service. Organizational researchers realized that once a decision was made, products were bought automatically over and over; recognizing a problem simply mean recognizing that the company is low in an item and needs to order more. The complete process was used only for new buys, products or services never purchased before. Automatic purchasing described what happen with straight rebuys, and only two steps were required. These steps are need recognition and placing an order. At other times, however, a product or service would be bought again but not automatically. When a company was contemplating a rebuy but wanted to shop around, the process will be included most or perhaps all of the steps ââ¬â hence the term modified re-buys. In this instance, the process may involve need recognition, an evaluation of suppliers, and a decision ââ¬â a process that can be similar to a new buy. The difference is not in the number of steps but in the amount and type of information that must be collected before a purchase can be made. Modified rebuys can also be similar to straight re-buys or new buys, depending on the specific of the situation. In a new buy, the buyer has no experience with the product or service and must be educated about the product or service to make a purchase. In a modified re-buy, the buyer has purchased the product or service before. There, the buyer will not spend time on education about the product itself, but the various vendors and their offerings as the buyer shops around. The buy grid model, therefore describe how purchasing practices vary along a continuum depending on the buyerââ¬â¢s experience in buying that particular product orà service. Value analysis is one situation that can turn a straight rebuy into a modified rebuy. When a company is closely evaluating a particular part, one question that is asked is if the part is available elsewhere for less. As the answer is sought to this question, out-suppliers (those suppliers who products are not considered in a straight re rebuy) are given the opportunity to earn business. In-suppliers (those suppliers whose products are ordered automatically in a straight rebuy) must prove value or create new value by redesigning their offerings. Thus, the purchase moves from being a straight rebuy to a modified rebuy. Buy-Grid and Marketing Practice The theory suggests that more information is needed by the buyer to make a new buy than when making a modified rebuy, and almost no information is needed for a straight rebuy. To use this model, a company would look at the degree to which a market is buying a product for the first time. If most of the market is buying the product for the first time, method of communication such as personal selling may be used in order to provide the most information. Advertising would contain a lot of detailed copy that described the benefits and how the product worked. Over-time, as the market grows more familiar with the product, less educational methods of communicating may be used, such as catalogs. Another marketing implication is thatan in-supplier would like purchases of its products to be straight rebuys. Annual contracts are one method of creating straight rebuys. For example, Xerox offers its customers an annual supply contract. Each time a department is low in copier supplies, the purchasing department orders automatically from Xerox, perhaps using EDI. Out-suppliers would be locked out until the next time the contract comes up for review. Recently, research has found that marketers who get involved early in the decision process are more likely to be successful. In part, this higherà probability of success is due to greater understanding of the buyerââ¬â¢s needs, an opportunity to help shape those needs, and a better understanding of the process. The lower probability of success when starting later in the process is also due to the fact that buyers become committed to a course of action over the process of making the decision, and that course often leans towards alternatives presented early in the process. When buyers donââ¬â¢t have experience, marketing strategies can provide buyers with the information they need to make a decision. Marketers consider how buyers use that information to be very important.

Genetically Engineered Food Essay - 2444 Words
Genetically Engineered Food As Scientists commence the unraveling of genetic mysteries the food we eat is undergoing significant changes. From supermarket produce, milk and eggs to tofu, sprouts and garden burgers most have genetically altered ingredients. As with all new products tests are necessary. Guinea pigs, used in those tests, show the effects of the Genetically Engineered (GE) feed. So far the tests have shown elevated breast cancer from ingesting milk from cows consuming (GE) hormones. Others tests have shown possible deadly allergic reactions to foods altered with proteins from peanuts or shellfish. Most dramatically in 1989 and 1990, a (GE) brand of L-tryptophan, a common dietary supplement, killed more than thirty. Animalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦These plants produce a sterile seed unable to reproduce itself. By flipping on a couple of genes a plant, is forced to make a toxic protein that will sterilize its seeds after it is fully grown . . . sterile-seed technology quickly became a potent sym bol for how genetically modified crops could cause a break in nature. Worse than that, such seeds could threaten more than a billion poor people throughout the developing world, for whom saving harvested seeds is essential. (Specter 62) In the past the best seeds were set aside by farmers. The best quality apples become the next generation of trees. The best of this years crop becomes next years seed and through the millennia farmers progressively produced a better crop. Farmers worked within plant and animal breeds improving quality. Now scientists armed with the tools of modern genetics are taking on natures secrets. This new technology breaks down not only genetic barriers between species but between humans, animals and plants. In the markets throughout the U. S. grocers sell tomatoes that have both the genes of the tomato itself with those of the pacific salmon. To the consumer that might not make sense but to the retailer it is extremely important. The fused salmon genes cause tomatoes to be resistant to bruising which extends shelf life. This gene fusing is not limited to the foods we eat but is branching out into the field of medicine.
